The latest addition to JK Rowling’s magical world, Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, landed with some fanfare when it hit theaters last month. The only JK Rowling-affiliated film to fall short of the $100 million mark at the domestic box office, many believe this version of the franchise ended prematurely. However, Warner Bros. apparently has no interest in letting the wizarding world sleep, so before long, we’ll no doubt be seeing more muggles and wizards in theaters and on HBO Max. With the franchise at a crossroads, it’s an opportune time to look back at the series’ debut on the big screen, Chris Columbus’ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Where Philosophical Stone depending on where you live).

While the books were already a runaway phenomenon at this point, Hollywood was unsure whether or not they would translate to the big screen. Director Chris Columbus pulled out all the stops to make it an elegant production, enlisting a who’s who of beloved English actors to fill the adult roles. At the same time, he cast a trio of young actors, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, to play Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley. Plus, he got John Williams to score!

As we explain in this episode of Fantasizing About Fantasy Films, the film was a smash hit at the box office, grossing nearly $1 billion worldwide and launching a franchise that will go down in history as the one of the most profitable of all time. This episode is written and narrated by Jessica Dwyer, edited by Bill Mazzola and produced by Adam Walton.

Do you think Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone holds more than twenty years later? Let us know in the comments!

The Concorde/Sunset International Films co-production stars Talisa Soto, Roger Daltrey (The legacy; tommy), Richard Joseph Paul, Brian Bloom, Corinna Jones [Harney]Rusty Meyers, Lee de Broux, Tom Deters, Jack Zavorak and Lenny Juliano.

A new film adaptation of the comic book is apparently in development.

Comments:

“Daltrey, who reportedly took the role because the late Keith Moon was a huge Vampi fan, is among the less impressive screen Draculas and, even sadder, comes across in his Jamie Blood act as an under-Austin Powers caricature. of himself. Full of bizarre concepts (a gun that projects artificial sunlight, hypodermic injections of holy water, vampires in protective suits modeled on planet of the vampires), it’s still too improvised to even qualify as a camp. Kim Newman’s website

“…relies on the occasional salaciousness in an attempt to overcome its stereotypical mid-’90s low-budget appearance. Sometimes it succeeds, but more often than not the film feels like the cheap quickie that it is.” There’s potential that he rarely cashes in, but you could do worse – there’s plenty of eye candy here and the whole thing is goofy enough to provide mindless fun. Rock! Shock! Popular!

Vampirella-movie-movie-1996-review-reviews-Talisa-Soto-touches-her-forehead

“…a procession of delightful images of chewing gum cards and solidly staged backdrops. And while neat ex-Bond girl Talisa Soto might not suit the Vampirella costume with the kind of Amazonian curves she’s been asked to […] she unloads a quality performance somewhere between pathos, hard-as-nails @csr-kicking, and comedic, fish-out-of-water bewilderment as her alien neck-biter tries to get to grips with life on earth. The Schlock Pit

“It fails to make its protagonist stoic and seductive, and its villains menacing. I’m not one to complain about sexy outfits, but this one is beyond distracting. More importantly, Talisa Soto doesn’t look comfortable. She doesn’t seem comfortable in the role either. She’s not a great actress. Terror Tales

“The plot seems to consist of a series of scenes from the comic book series, regardless of whether or not they would work cinematically. Cheap, shoddy, and consciously campy without being fun or interesting, vampire is pushed a bit further into the pain zone by Daltrey…” TV Guide

Vampirella-movie-movie-1996-review-reviews-Roger-Daltrey

“Average viewing if you’re able to control your brain, though it suffers from a lame finale (which has Daltrey running around in a Dracula cape). While Soto is fun to watch, despite his ugly latex costume and ample, if not a lot of acting. Nothing special.” video graveyard

There is absolutely no logical reason Breaking point (1991) should have become a classic. The plot is absurd. The dialogue is goofy. Almost every image is on top. Still, many, many people rank it as an all-time favorite movie. Or at least one of their favorite action movies of all time. And for good reason. Breaking point has all the makings of a totally forgettable cinematic footnote, but it’s one of the greatest and most unique American action films ever made.

Breaking point was a film in tune with the times – an encapsulation of movies and pop culture during that colorful transition from the 1980s to the 1990s – with the perfect director, cast, screenplay, style and timing. If you deliberately tried to cause this magic to happen again, the results would be horrendous. Do you doubt it? Try watching the 2015 remake. Actually, no, don’t do that to yourself. Just YouTube this amazing wingsuit scene.

Part of the genius of point break, and why it is so rewatchable is its structure. The plot revolves around a group of daredevils. Their main activities are surfing, solo free climbing and bank robbing. The idea of a semi-Zen gang of maverick surfers in Los Angeles taking repeated jabs at the system while dressing like ex-presidents is a dark, appealing conceit reminiscent of America’s obsession with Dillinger and James. . Yet these anti-establishment criminals of the modern counterculture work so fast, so cleanly, that no one is ever hurt – until they do.

Masked ex-presidents with the faces of Richard Nixon, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Lyndon Johnson. Alamy file photo.

In Breaking point these counterculture themes lurk in the background. You’re not even certain of the identity of the bank robbers until the end of the film, and you find out that they’re rock climbing and skydiving from some photos we see in a panning shot and from which Tyler (the always awesome Lori Petty) explains in a brief exposition dump. You don’t have to see it. This creates a distance that makes the gang more mysterious, and the turning point in the third act where we discover with certainty that Bodhi (Patrick Swayze) and his surfer buddies are indeed the bank robbers is therefore more believable.

The movie doesn’t focus on criminals but on Johnny Utah – a name that rings even more falsely coming from young Keanu Reeves’ peach-tinted face. That’s another reason Breaking point has aged so well: it’s honest how corny it is, how film that is – from character names to action setup. This movie knows it’s a movie and winks at the viewer saying, “We know you know. Now enjoy this pure action fantasy.

Nothing about Breaking point portrays reality, and it’s not supposed to. It opens with Utah doing Hogan’s Alley style sparring practice in the to pay rain wearing a T-shirt and jeans. A guy in a hat hisses and points at him, and our soaking wet hero looks at the camera over his shoulder like he’s so cool he’s even forgotten he’s on a film set. He puts a chewing gum in his mouth and chews.

Utah leaps from his perch on a car trunk, stows his shotgun one-handed in slow motion, and begins blasting wooden targets while rolling and diving down the course. All of this is intercut with cinematic slow-motion shots of a Bodhi figure surfing at sunset.

The dude in an FBI jacket noting Utah’s performance hits a stopwatch, writes something, and yells, “One hundred percent, Utah!” Keanu flashes a movie star smile with his perfectly wet hair draped over his forehead and gives him a thumbs up. That is the tone of the whole film. It’s courting eye rolls that will turn into cheers, and he knows it.

“Stand back, Warchild. Seriously.’

Breaking point has a solid core of a storyline, peppered with plenty of crime and crime movie tropes, like the pairing of a salty middle-aged guy with a hotshot rookie, and a boss who always has his head up his ass and yells a lot . With the talented cast in place, director Kathryn Bigelow produced the roller coaster of a popcorn movie. It’s not a political statement about anything, and neither actor lived as a 17th-century shit-digger to get into character. Yes, there are comments about the evils of capitalism, but they’re only used as a way for the film’s criminals to justify the bank robbery.

If any element of Breaking point were removed or modified, the movie would not have worked. If Johnny and Bodhi’s oddly unwarranted but somehow all-natural bromance even had a slightly different tone, it might have been lackluster and generic. And nobody could have pulled off the Bodhi character without making you hate him, let alone root him, like Patrick Swayze. Man could say anything, and it works. Perfect example: “Stand back, Warchild. Seriously.”

There’s a rule in the game that says if you have to do or say something absurd, something that seems completely ridiculous and unrelated to reality, the only way to do it is to fully commit. Otherwise, no one will buy it. The late and great Patrick Swayze did it role after role. You can even imagine him on set coaching young Keanu Reeves with his performance: “No, kid. Say it like this: ‘I caught my first hit today. Sir.'”

Then there’s the classic burnt out, past prime, self-abusive but honest cop played by an energetic, overweight 1990s Gary Busey. His Angelo Pappas and Utah have great chemistry that hits differently than other police partner movie couples of the era. Utah is a slightly overconfident Blue Flame Special Agent, but he’s no cocky little jerk. Pappas is an exaggerated has-been, but he is not a completely miserable old bastard. He has fun with it, and so do we. And his performance never fails to plant a seed that will grow into a deep meatball sub craving. “Utah! Give me two!

A film is generally considered a classic because it can be watched over and over again. A reusable film is like a catchy song. He has a good hook, and every time you see him, it’s satisfying.

The rhythm of Breaking point is so excellent, and there are so many fun parts – the bank robberies, the house raid, the surfing scenes, the chases, John C. McGinley, the gas pump flamethrower, the Tom Sizemore cameo , the skydiving scenes, that ending – that it’s hard to get tired of watching it. It’s a movie that appears on cable at 11 p.m. that you can’t resist. There’s no choice but to shrug and sigh, “I guess I’m going to bed late tonight.” For this reason, and many more, Breaking point is eternal and the kind of exceptional pop-Hollywood action-adventure movie that we probably won’t see again for a long time, if ever. He’s as timeless as the waves, and knows it, and knows you know it. Vaya with Dios.

Why can’t the big-budget fantasy film “Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets” make a splash in the Chinese film market? https://fallenwall.org/why-cant-the-big-budget-fantasy-film-fantastic-beasts-dumbledores-secrets-make-a-splash-in-the-chinese-film-market/ Sun, 10 Apr 2022 11:33:00 +0000 https://fallenwall.org/why-cant-the-big-budget-fantasy-film-fantastic-beasts-dumbledores-secrets-make-a-splash-in-the-chinese-film-market/ ]]>

fantastic beastsbut where are the fantastic beasts?” This is perhaps the biggest complaint from Chinese audiences after watching the Warner Bros. film. fantastic beasts: Dumbledore’s secrets.

Although the Chinese mythological beast qilin, a kind of Chinese mythical animal, appeared in the $175-200 million budget film in an attempt to please moviegoers, the film unfortunately failed to produce box office magic. from the Chinese mainland or on review platforms.

According to Chinese ticketing platform Maoyan, fantastic beasts: Dumbledore’s secrets grossed just 18.89 million yuan ($2.97 million) with an attendance rate of just 5.1% on Friday, the day it opened in mainland China.

This is down from the previous two films fantastic beasts and where to find them and fantastic beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwaldwhich earned 74.84 million yuan in 2016 and 80.41 million yuan in 2018 respectively in their first days.

The box office failure cannot be entirely blamed on the current COVID-19 outbreak, which has caused 57% of theaters to close. Maoyan shows that 5,173 theaters are currently open, while the number of screens in operation has fallen to 2015 levels, when Fast and Furious 7 crushed the Chinese mainland box office with 2.4 billion. yuan.

Reviews for the Harry Potter spin-off series also declined, dropping from 7.6 and 7.0 for the first two installments to 6.3 for the third installment, according to Chinese media review website Douban.

According to plans announced by Warner Bros, the Wizarding World spin-off should consist of five films in total. While the birth and development of this series is inseparable from the continued popularity of the Harry Potter books and films, each of the new films has gradually become intertwined with the lore of the universe, leading to stories that cannot be understood. only by die-hard Harry Potter fans. .

In reviews, many moviegoers said that the story of fantastic beasts: Dumbledore’s secrets is too closely tied to the original Harry Potter movies, making it difficult for viewers who haven’t seen those previous works to understand the film’s storyline.

A follow-up can be a double-edged sword. The popularity of previous films can help ensure an embedded audience and there to potentially increase profits. But if these sequels aren’t handled well, it can damage the reputation of the entire franchise as a whole.

It might be a good idea for the sequels to be relatively independent of the above so that audiences can enjoy the film without having watched the previous works, just like the Transformers and Impossible mission movies.

The second major holiday season for 2022 in China has just ended, but there have been no imported Hollywood blockbusters on the market yet. The past model that relies too heavily on IP to develop sequels has seen various negative market reactions under the influence of the pandemic.

Take the example of the recent imported film The Batman. Although it was adapted from a well-known IP, it experienced poor box office performance in the mainland.

Therefore, how to continuously release commercial films that can be well received globally has become the current major problem for major Hollywood film companies.
