Fantasy game Voxel Ravenlok announced with new trailer

So far, indie developer Cococucumber has released four games, including last year’s Echo generation. At first, Cococucumber games boasted of simple and inviting 2D art styles. But from 2019 Riverbondthe developer chose to inject all of its recent games with a voxel aesthetic that immediately grabs the player’s attention. Ravenlock, the latest project from Cococucumber, seeks to continue this trend, with the developer even calling it the third and final game in its “Voxel Trilogy”. Featured during yesterday’s Xbox and Bethesda showcase, Ravenlock seems to have perfected this aesthetic, as the trailer depicts an incredibly detailed fantasy world that makes Cococucumber’s previous outing look almost tame in comparison.

According to the Epic Games Store page, Ravenlock features a young girl of the same name who “finds herself removed from reality and in a land shrouded in darkness”. This fantasy world has succumbed to the domination and corruption of a villain known as the Caterpillar Queen. Fortunately, Ravenlok rose to the challenge of defeating this fearsome foe and restoring the land to its former glory.

An end-to-end action RPG

As for gameplay, Ravenlock features a real-time action RPG combat system that lets the titular protagonist take on all sorts of massive creatures with sword swings and magic spells. Like any other action RPG, players can acquire a variety of weapons and upgrade their skills to make these combat encounters more manageable. Additionally, Ravenlok can undertake various quests given by “curious creatures”. By completing them, players can learn a bit more about the “secret stories” of these creatures.

Even though the overall gameplay loop ends up not being too impressive, Ravenlock looks like a game worth playing for aesthetics alone. At this time, Cococucumber has not provided a definitive release date for Ravenlocksaying only that it will arrive in early 2023.
