Final Fantasy XIII is the black sheep of the franchise in many ways. Fan reception to the release wasn’t stellar – especially compared to the hype surrounding it – and many disliked its more hallway-like linearity and lack of openness (until much later in the game). However, once you’re strapped in, you’re in for a treat. Featuring a cast of great female protagonists, male protagonists who complement this game’s female story well, and one of the best combat systems in the series, Final Fantasy XIII deserves more love than it gets. receives it. Its combat, which focuses on finding weaknesses to stun enemies, is fresh, and it’s such a swing in the opposite direction to its predecessor’s excellent (but very divisive) combat that you can’t help but to admire it.
The story can be pretty absurd in an overall sense, but each character’s individual stories feature series of elevated depictions of romance, fatherhood, sibling love, and more, all further heightened by excellent voice casting. And don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten what’s easily the best aspect of Final Fantasy XIII, and that’s the music. Masashi Hamauzu did to Final Fantasy XIII what Phil Collins did to Disney’s Tarzan: he created a masterpiece when no one expected it.
